A Clinical Study on Colorectal Cancer


Abstract
This is a retrospective clinical analysis on 216 patients of colorectal cancer who were treated with operation the duration of 7 years from Jaundary 1986 to December 1992 at the department of Surgery, Pusan National University Hospital, and the
results
obtained were summerized as follow.
1) The sex ratio of male to female was 1.2:1 and peak age group was the 7th decade(30.1%).
2) The most common location of tumor was the rectum in 131 cases(60.6%) and the next were ascending colon 42 cases(19.4%) and sigmoid colon 23 cases(10.6%).
3) Common symptoms and signs were bowel habit change in 126 cases(58.3%), abdominal pain 15 cases(53.2%), and weight loss 104 cases(48.6%).
4) The duration of desease from onset of symptoms to operation were less than 6 months in 119 cases(55%).
5) The operation performed included abdominoperineal resection in 60 cases(27.8%), Rt. hemicoloectomy 44 cases(20.4%), low anterior resection 26 cases(12.05), and anterior resection 19 cases (8.8%).
6) The stage of disease of disease at initial resection were as follows: Dukes' C: 112 cases(1.8%), B 47 cases(21.7%), D:52 cases(24.2%), A: 5 cases(2.3%).
7) The most frequent postoperative complication was wound infection, 12 cases(5.5%).
